Serving Breakfast to the Homeless

Serving Breakfast to the Homeless

At UU St. Pete social justice infuses almost everything that we do.

In our ministry and work, we strive for greater inclusiveness, diversity, and multiculturalism, working to create the Beloved Community of which we dream.  The Homeless Subcommittee carries this mission forward advocating for the rights of the homeless in South Pinellas county.

The Subcommittee serves supper at Beacon House Homeless Men's Shelter, 2151 Central Avenue, on every second and fourth Monday from 4:45 to 6 p.m.  Beacon House provides about 100 people with a hot meal six days a week. Contact Pat Yochim if you would like to help serve supper.

The Homeless Subcommittee also serves brunch at ASAP Homeless Services.  Donations of canned goods and other staples, personal care items, clothing (especially underwear and socks) are routinely provided. Many homeless people use ASAP's services, such as a daily shower and change of clothing, and are also able to apply for jobs using ASAP's address and phone number, a great help for those trying to get work.

To raise money to support the ongoing work of the Homeless Subcommittee, a Pancake Breakfast is held every month. Join us between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. for a delicious breakfast - all you can eat - for a suggested $3 donation.  Consult the church calendar for the next Pancake Breakfast.  The money raised each month goes to Beacon House, ASAP and the Refuge.

In addition to the Pancake Breakfast, the third Sunday of every month is "Share-the-Plate" Sunday where half of the non-pledge portion of the offertory is given to a social justice project.  Thanks to this community's continued generosity and support we have made financial contributions this past quarter of over $1000.00 to ASAP, Beacon House and the Refuge.
