Update from your Buildings and Grounds Committee

Major projects we are working on include a new stairway with lift to Conway’s second floor that may be located in the playground area, a new ADA accessible bathroom to be located in the front office bathroom, and remodel of the sinks and dishwasher area in the kitchen. A new patio area at the front of the church is also under consideration.

Over the past six months we have repaired broken air conditioners and dishwashers, fixed holes in the roof, replaced all exit lights, changed lights and switches with energy efficient replacements, repainted RE stairs, replaced RE classroom doors with fire doors, replaced the chimney cap, trimmed the trees at front and side of the church, renovated the inner courtyard, installed a French drain and trimmed the bamboo, repainted the library, and installed two new bike racks—just to name a few.

Our sanctuary was built in 1929 and requires a lot of maintenance and upkeep.  Much of this work is done by volunteers because the church budget does not cover enough to pay tradesmen.  In addition, our membership has increased and so too has our utility and other operating expenses.

Buildings & Grounds Committee hopes you will learn more about our church’s financial resource situation.  You are also encouraged to join our volunteers. There is always more to do and we can use your ideas and efforts.  Come join us.  We meet at 5:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month.

UUSP Parking Lot "Good News" Update

The City has approved the ADA-compliant parking plan that WJA submitted for our new parking lot. The City also approved relocating both WJA’s and UUSP’s dumpsters from their current locations in the alley to the median between the parking lot  and the alley.  This appears to resolve the dumpster issue, does not require using any parking spaces, and greatly improves the appearance. In addition, WJA has agreed to build and pay for an enclosure with gates for the two dumpsters at a cost of $13,000.

Our parking lot will also have an extra 10 foot wide space that we can designate as we choose (for example, “reserved for expectant mothers and handicapped people”). This doubles the ADA parking required by the City.

Due to rising costs (materials, equipment, etc.) the cost of constructing the parking lot has gone up an additional $80,000, from $180,000 to $260,000. WJA will absorb the additional $80,000 cost. An architectural site plan is available to anyone who would like to see the design.

Initial grading work will begin in December, at which time the lot will not be accessible. In January full construction will begin. During this period there will be ample parking on weekends and evenings for UUSP members. The Human Services Department of Pinellas County, which has a parking lot across Arlington Street and in the next block on Mirror Lake Drive and 6th St N, has posted that its 100-space parking lot is now open to the public during non-business hours (Mon-Fri 6pm-4am and Sat-Sun 8am-4am). This is in addition to the 24 spaces it already allows us to use at the corner of Arlington Ave and Mirror Lake Drive.

The parking lot plan will allow UUSP to construct a safe walkway from the lot across the alley to UUSP’s back entrance, if we choose. This can be constructed after the parking lot construction is completed and will require us to comply with City codes that apply.
