A Proud Supporter Of St. Pete Pride

Subcommittee Mission
The subcommittee for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender issues joins together to protect and promote civil rights for all and to increase acceptance and involvement throughout the community.
Outreach
Who says you can’t have fun while doing good?
The whole Church, not just the GLBT Subcommittee, enjoys outreach opportunities like the St. Petersburg Pride Celebration. St Pete Pride is one of the largest GLBT festivals in the US, but second to none in fun!! 50,000 people participate in St. Pete Pride, many of them learning of the UU tradition for the first time.
In April of 2008, we led the Church in outreach to the lesbian community by participating in the 7th Annual Gulfport Womyn’s Festival. Members of the Church had the opportunity to distribute UU literature and speak with some of the 3,000 women who attended that day while enjoying the entertainment and festivities.
Our Church has welcomed prospective new members as a result of these and similar outreach efforts.
Advocacy
We take strong positions on important policy issues such as marriage equality. Members of the congregation are happy for public opportunities to celebrate diversity in our faith.
Education
We host speakers during the year who deliver timely messages to the congregation and the broader public. Marc Adams and Nadine Smith spoke on important issues such as the “ex-gay movement” and how protecting GLBT rights benefits society as a whole. During St. Pete Pride 2009, our Worship Service - "What a Difference a Gay Makes" - will be conducted by Rev. Mark Spivey. Our educational efforts also reach the public through press releases, interviews, and participation at rallies and other gatherings.
In the Fall of 2009, we are starting the process to become a Welcoming Congregation. The Welcoming Congregation Program is a completely volunteer program for congregations that see a need to become more inclusive towards bisexual, gay, lesbian, and/or transgender people.
