2018 CANDIDATES FORUM: Pinellas County School Board

Candidates are running to fill four Pinellas County School Board seats. UU St Pete is a member of the FAST Coalition which has asked the current school board to counter the rising number of in-school arrests and suspensions for minor offenses by putting in place a robust “restorative practices” program.  FAST members of our congregation are meeting with candidates, and these are the questions they are asking them:

  • Do you agree that Pinellas County Schools has a track record of not giving teaching staff the training and resources they need when implementing new Programs?
  • What have your experiences been with restorative practices? Do you see this as an effective way to deal with the discipline problems of the school district?
  • If elected, would you agree to a pilot of the “safer saner schools” program?
  • If elected, will you advocate for the school district to release quarterly accountability reports of suspension, arrest and reading scores broken down by school and race?

The League of Women Voters is moderating Candidate Forums for school board candidates. YOUR vote can shape the future of education in Pinellas County!  All parents, teachers and community members are invited to attend this important debate to learn more about the candidates’ positions before casting your vote in the Primary Election on August 28, 2018.

A UU Prayer

To those who stay when everyone scurries home

And turn out the lights

Turn down the AC

Unplug the toilets

Clean up standing water

Fix leaks in the ceiling

Wrestle a failing grease trap

Install modern lighting

Paint dingy stairways

Clean up dirty dishes

I thank you and light my internal chalice in gratitude to you.

Sunday Flowers

We would like to remind everyone that we need more folks to step up and agree to bring flowers on Sundays.  Just stop by the Sunday Flowers table during coffee hour after service (usually at the piano in Gilmour) and pick a date that works for you to maybe commemorate a birthday, anniversary, special event, in memory of, etc...

Reach out to Jim Fitzgerald if you have questions or to sign up.  We love seeing the flowers each week.

Thank you!
