TIBETAN MONKS AT UU ST PETE - Potluck and Presentation

Saturday, February 4, 2017 - 6:00pm

UUSP has the honor of hosting eight Tibetan Buddhist monks at a dinner on Saturday evening, February 4, in our social hall.  The evening will start with a potluck dinner at 6:00pm, followed by a presentation by the monks. Please be part of our welcome of this extraordinary group.

The monks (usually in residence with the Dalai Lama, exiled in India) are conducting a Sacred Art Tour, with St. Pete as one of their stops. Their primary activities in St. Pete will be creating a sacred Peace sand mandala at the Florida CraftArts Gallery at 501 Central Avenue, plus daily chanting at 10am and 5pm.

The focus of the presentation at UUSP has yet to be decided - possibly one of the tradition's sacred dances, possibly a talk on Tibetan Buddhist tradition and practice (with perhaps a note or two about how the community is maintaining the tradition and practice in exile).

Roundtable Discussion Groups - Parking Lot Options

Sunday, February 5, 2017 - 11:45pm

Please join our Roundtable Discussion Groups about options on what to do with our parking lot. This will be the third of three roundtables, which are designed for church members to find out what's been happening with the parking lot, have a look at the various options our congregation has, and give voice to your questions and concerns. This is an important issue, and knowing the facts and options is the responsibility of UUSP members, who will ultimately decide which direction our church should go.

Immigration Executive Orders: Continue to Contact your Congressman and both Senators

Despite reductions in Mexican immigrants crossing our southern border -- our President has signed Executive Orders to finish the 2,000 mile wall, hire 5,000 additional Border Patrol agents and 10,000 more immigration officers, build new prisons to house detainees prior to deportation and to deputize local law enforcement. The latter means that our local police and sheriff deputies would be asked to enforce federal immigration law. An additional order bans Muslims from certain countries entry or re-entry into the U.S.

Call your Representative and Senators:

  1. State your name and zip code.  Their staff discards calls outside their district.
  2. State that you oppose funding an extension of the wall with Mexico, hiring an additional 15,000 federal personnel, using local law enforcement to arrest and detain undocumented immigrants and preventing Muslims who hold Visas from entering or re-entering the US.
  3. That you support the retention of support for the DREAMERs.
  4. That you oppose the ban on refugees based on their religion.
