Sunday is Share the Plate Sunday

Which means that one half of the non-pledge portion of the offering will be used to support one of this Church’s social justice projects. Both today’s and the November share the plates will help make Christmas a bit merrier for the immigrant and refugee families that UU St Pete supports.

We are currently working closely with two refugee families from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are also two immigrant families that we helped a lot in the past who are now quite independent but at this time of year they need a helping hand. We also want to send something to Rucia, Mahoro and Gilbert who they have moved to Dayton to be nearer to extended family but have left behind a warm place in all of our hearts. Please be generous.

Thank you

Postcard Signing -- DREAM Act

When President Trump rescinded the DACA Executive Order -- 800,000 young people were put at risk for deportation. Their parents brought them to the US as children, and they have grown up here. To protect these DREAMERs -- federal legislation needs to be passed, signed and implemented in 2017.

Bills have been introduced by both political parties in both the US Senate and House of Representatives; but no bills have been scheduled for hearings – let alone votes.

After service on Sunday we will have a table with stamped postcards and address labels for both FL Senators and the local House Representatives. Ask them to demand that hearings and votes for Dream Act legislation be scheduled for this calendar year.

It will take you just a few minutes to write the cards -- but it is so important to add your voice to the national appeal for a permanent solution that provides a pathway to legal status for these young people.

We Need YOU to Take Action NOW!

Reflecting the nationwide support for the Dreamers, multiple bills have been introduced by congressional representatives from both political parties in both the Senate (S) and House of Representatives (HR).

But no bills have been scheduled for hearings – let alone votes.

IN SOLIDARITY WITH DREAMERS -- we need your help now to make sure that federal legislation is passed in 2017 to protect them. In order for any bill to go into effect, it must be passed by both the Senate and the House and signed by the President. Then the Department of Homeland Security needs to develop implementation procedures. That is why it is imperative that hearings and votes get scheduled now.
Contact your Congressperson and both Florida Senators. Call, email or visit each of them. It takes just a few minutes, and is so easy to do.
●    State your name and zip code. Calls and messages from outside their district are not counted.
●    Like most Americans you support Dreamers remaining in the country permanently
●    Ask them to demand that hearings and votes for Dream Act legislation be scheduled for this calendar year,         and to support:
        ○    A “clean” bill – one that is not tied to other immigration related issues such as funding the wall with Mexico or stripping current protections for unaccompanied minors from Central America.
        ○    A bill that provides Dreamers legal status and a pathway to citizenship.

If the phone lines are blocked or voice mailbox is full, cut and paste the bullet points from above into their email templates on their websites!

We do not want hearings or passage of legislation postponed until early 2018, since some DACA recipients will begin to lose their protective status on March 5, 2018. At that time several will be subject to deportation to countries they did not grow up in.

FAST and UUSP Participation Update

FAST December Meeting  On Sunday, December 10 at about 15 minutes after the end of service, we will provide a FAST update in Conway Hall. FAST (Faith Action Stand Together) is made up some 40 Pinellas congregations, and UUSP joined this group earlier this year. By involving the thousands of members of so many congregations, we have the political strength to exert effective pressure to bring about positive change to social justice issues in the county. Research has already started on specific issues related to Affordable Housing, Youth/Education Concerns, and Statewide Youth Civil Citations (instead of arrest). During Sunday’s meeting we will bring you up to date on November’s research activities.

We already have some 16 UUSP members involved with FAST, and we would love to have more of our congregation members and friends involved.

Hope to see you after service on Sunday.
