New Director of Music for UU St. Pete!

We are very pleased to announce that the UUSP Board has contracted for this new church year with Jon Arterton to be UUSP's Director of Music, starting later this September.  Jon is the founder and director of St. Pete's OneCity Chorus, a large diverse community chorus specializing in inspirational folk and justice music.   Several UUSPers participate in the OneCity Chorus.  When Jon lived on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, he served for 15 years as director of music for the UU Church of Provincetown.  Jon's husband James served the Provincetown UU church for 8 years as its Board president.  Jon's primary responsibilities will be to direct our choirs and coordinate with Pastor Jack, the Worship Committee, and our wonderful accompanist Teresa Ancaya in planning our music for Sunday mornings.  Jon will begin working with our choirs in the last week or two of September.  Please welcome him warmly when he arrives.  Pastor Jack

Women's Book/Covenant Group: Starts September 2, 2018

Women's Book/Covenant Group: Meets Sunday mornings 9:15-10:15am in Conway North.

With over half of our regular attendees still out of town this summer, and with new faces at UUSP every Sunday, we have delayed the kick-off of our third season to Sunday, September 2, 2018. We will begin with the book Not for Ourselves Alone, available from inSpirit, the UUA Bookstore in print; from the Amazon Kindle Store; and on Google Play. We plan to read and discuss 15-20 pages each week. If you are new to UUSP (or newly interested in a book/covenant group) and would like to join this women's group, please contact: Cynthia Patterson, cp3860@gmail.com.

Parking Lot Update – August 10, 2018

In an August meeting with WJA, we learned that the parking lot construction has been delayed due to the City’s permitting process.  A clerical error stated that WJA owned all three parcels of the UUSP parking lot, instead of just parcel 1. The error has affected several aspects of the PL project but is being corrected.

WJA estimates that City permitting will be final at the end of October 2018, and that parking lot construction will begin in early November. The first phase of the construction will take four weeks and we will all have improved parking. The last phase of putting down asphalt, striping, etc. will take two weeks and will be done after the construction of the exterior of the new WJA building.  This will take 9-10 months and has an estimated completion date in September or October 2019.

Estimated timeframe:

September 2018 – Pre-Construction Kickoff Meeting for UUSP/WJA to discuss plans, contacts, etc.

End of October 2018 – permitting for PL completed

Early November to December 2018 – PL first phase construction.

December 2018 – improved parking lot completed

January to October 2019 – WJA new building construction

October 2019 – Final surfacing of UUSP PL

From an environmental view, pervious layers will be used for ecologically friendly environment; runoff will remain on site and not into Mirror Lake; piles will be drilled, not pounded; as few trees as possible will be taken down in complying with City code which requires a 10 foot wide sidewalk.

The City surprised us at the May 2nd City Commission Hearing by requiring that the dumpsters in the alley be moved out of the alley and onto UUSP and/or WJA property. The Easement Agreement does not address the placement of dumpsters since there was no requirement to move them at that time. Options that the Board will consider include moving our dumpster to a parking space or a corner of the playground area.

With questions contact Paul Burnore and any Board member.

Progress on the New UU St. Pete Website

Janeya Filzen is working on giving UUSP a new website.  We need to put together some header pictures for the various pages, along with phrases describing or identifying the pictures.

If you have some interesting or informative photos depicting UUSP activities, we would love it if you'd send them to Janeya at janeyajoy@gmail.com

Thanks, Pastor Jack

Sunday Flowers

We would like to remind everyone that we need more folks to step up and agree to bring flowers on Sundays.  Just stop by the Sunday Flowers table during coffee hour after service (usually at the piano in Gilmour) and pick a date that works for you to maybe commemorate a birthday, anniversary, special event, in memory of, etc...

Reach out to Jim Fitzgerald if you have questions or to sign up.  We love seeing the flowers each week.

Thank you!
