UUSC

UUSC - UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SERVICE COMMITTEE

Mission

The mission of this church committee is to coordinate, inform and participate in the activities which are sponsored by the UUSC, and to encourage both individual and congregational membership in UUSC.

The mission of the UUSC is to advance human rights and social justice around the world, partnering with those who confront unjust power structures and mobilizing to challenge oppressive policies. The mission of UUSC is guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), as well as Unitarian Universalist principles, which affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person.  The four program areas are: Civil Liberties, Economic Justice, Environmental justice, and Rights in Humanitarian Crises.  The UUSC  is not part of the Unitarian Universalist Association and receives no financial support from the UUA, although both organizations sometimes work together to put UU principles into action.

What Can I Do?

                Reflect, understand and act.

Every day the media are filled with human rights stories about minimum wage demonstrations, human trafficking, voting rights, water wars, refugee camps, etc.  Reflect on these stories in order to understand their relationships to civil liberties, economic justice, environmental justice, and rights in humanitarian crises.  Then act.

Join the UUSC.  Volunteer to be a UUSC representative.

Go to UUSC's website and learn about its many activities.

Participate in the Guest at Your Table.

Buy Holiday Cards to support the UUSC

Support our Fair Trade sales of coffee, tea and cocoa. our most direct way to help growers                              earn a living wage.

Worship

Just what is a Worship Committee? The Worship Committee works closely with the minister to promote excellence in our worship and in those things which support and complement our worship. Worship is at the center of our church life. Consequently, the work of the Worship Committee has a central function in the life of our community.

The Worship Committee works to fill the pulpit for the Sundays that our minister is off. We help to plan special services. We develop and monitor systems to make sure the services run smoothly. The Music Program falls within the scope of this Committee, and we work closely with our Music Director to support him in providing the best in this important function.

The Worship Committee is an interesting and exciting place to be. We meet once a month, and meetings are open to all. We encourage you to check out our meetings and consider joining us. Your input and ideas are more than welcome! If you have questions, please contact one of our co-chairs, Sabine von Aulock or Susan Burnore. Alternatively, contact our minister, Rev. Jack Donovan.

Children’s Religious Education

Welcome! Do your children have questions?

"My child was asking about religion and wanted to go to church," said one adult.

"My children were asking about God, and I didn't know what to tell them," stated another adult.

At UU St. Pete, we are here to assist you as your child explores life's questions. Our purpose in the Religious Education program is to foster the full spiritual and faith development of children and youth so that they may lead healthy, happy, helpful lives. Our program aims to encourage exploration of humanity’s many wisdom traditions and involvement in our church and community.

For pre-K children through and high school youth, we offer a variety of age-specific classes: discussion, art, yoga, meditation, music, and more. Everyone gathers in the sanctuary to participate in the beginning of the church service. During the Time For All Ages, children and youth are invited to gather at the front for an activity. Then, RE staff members lead the students to their classes.

In Nursery Care, our youngest children receive warm and loving care. Parents need to bring bottles, diapers, and any special instructions. Parents are welcome to visit. The nursery is open from 10:15am to noon on Sundays. Additional hours are available upon advance request so that adults can attend church activities outside that time.

For more information about our Religious Education program, please contact our RE Chair, Melissa Allen.

Pastoral Care

The Pastoral Care Ministry addresses the joys, sorrows and transitions in the lives of members, their immediate family. and friends of the church. This is done through direct service, visits in various settings, and consultation at the church office.

Several Ministry Members and the Pastoral Care Minister visit and make phone calls on a regular basis. We offer occasional workshops in conjunction with the Suncoast Memorial Society and/or Hospice of the Suncoast. We also send cards of support, as well as celebratory cards for birthdays and anniversaries.

The Care Ministry has several regular members, and others are encouraged to join in the meetings held at 12:30pm on the first Sunday of each month.

For further information or to arrange for a visitation, please email or call the church office at 898-3294. And please let the Pastoral Care Minister know how services might be broadened and deepened.
