Advocacy DOES Work — Homestead Is Closed

Our thanks to each of you who wrote postcards to Rep. Crist and Senators Rubio and Scott asking to them to conduct oversight hearings about the child immigrant detention center in Homestead, FL. Those hearings first focused on the treatment of the children housed there as well as the long term emotional impacts to them. By mid-August those children were moved to smaller non-profit facilities or were reunited with a family member. Though no longer housing children, the Office of Refugee Resettlement still paid $600 per “empty” bed.  Again many groups, including UU St Pete membersfriends and guests, and the media raised concerns to our elected officials in Congress. On October 28 it was announced that this facility was permanently closing.

Thank you — working together — we do make a difference.
