End Detentions — Treat Migrants Humanely

Last Sunday many of you signed postcards to your US Representative and Senators.

On July 3, I joined a coalition of local organizations deeply concerned about the treatment of migrants, and in particular the 2,600 children detained at the for-profit facility in Homestead FL, who met with US Rep Crist’s Staff Director, Steven Cary. We asked that the Congressman co-sponsor the Restoring Oversight for Members of Congress Act and to visit Homestead. He agreed to both.

We also asked that the House Appropriations Committee, of which he is a member, to conduct hearings regarding the fiscal oversight of the various no-bid contracts, the hiring practices of the vendors and the treatment of the detainees. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for July 24.

More and more officials are attempting to visit the Homestead facility — the publicity on the many offenses at the Border and inland where some migrants are shipped to be detained — continues to be reported on. God bless the press!

What can you do?

You can coninue to call or email your US Congressman and US Senators from FL  — just go to their websites and ask for two things:

  •   Conduct hearings and provide oversight on the various no-bid contracts regarding migrants.
  •   Personally visit Homestead.

AND be part of the National Lights for Liberty Vigil — To End immigrant Detention on July 12.

Local vigil will be at 7:00pm at the Allendale United Methodist Church, 3803 Haines Road N in St Pete.

Thank you,
