UUSP Town Hall Meeting on Expenditure for Social Justice

Location: Sanctuary

A UUSP Town Hall Meeting will be held after the June 3 service to acquaint the congregation with UUSP’s proposed increased support for the Tiny Homes for Veterans community project, and to hear your thoughts.

Several of you have already been supporting this project through the UUSP ministry UUs Helping People for some time. UUHP has been a strong partner with this community-wide coalition, however this may be new to others. So please join us on Sunday, June 3 to learn more. Also, after this Sunday’s service, stop by the library in Gilmour to learn more about the project and view models of the planned Tiny Homes.

UUSP’s increased support would entail a tithe of $25,000 to this community project, so that Celebrate Outreach can build St. Pete’s first Tiny Home for Homeless Veterans. The funds would originate from the $240,000 proceeds of the sale of UUSP’s Lot #1. During the discussions leading up to the sale, the idea of using a portion of the proceeds to support a community project was discussed. The idea being to invest in the community’s needy while also raising awareness of our Church within the community.

Your Social Justice Committee developed and presented this proposal at the May 10 Board meeting. The full Board of Trustees, plus UUSP’s two ministers, were unanimously in favor. UUSP has long supported and helped lead Celebrate Outreach in its advocacy for ending homelessness and hunger in our community. Our hope, endorsed by the Board, was that the building of the first Tiny Home will inspire support for greatly expanding construction of such life-saving-and-empowering homes.  This allocation of funds is in keeping with goals discussed by the congregation in voting for the sale of Lot #1.  It is also on the UUSP priorities list that has been developed over the past six months.

The Board members agreed that specific congregational input was essential before the Board makes a final vote. This means your attendance at the Town Meeting would be greatly appreciated.
